Herpes - Cold Sores

Herpes labialis (cold sores) - is very common. It can occur on the lips, nose, mouth and face. It is caused by herpes virus type 1. Herpes virus type 2 usually causes genital infection. Both viruses can cause blistering of the skin on the face and genitals.

How Do I Get Cold Sore

The virus is spread by direct contact or through sharing eating utensils, razors or towels.

Herpes Symptoms

  • Swollen red and painful skin on the outside of the mouth or lips with small blisters filled with fluid. labial herpes
  • The blisters may break open and then sore, yellow scab creates, than fall of and heal after 7 to 10 days.
  • Symptoms may occur 2 to 20 days after your body has been exposed to the virus. One to two days before blisters appear you may feel itching, pain or tingling and burning sensation.
  • The first infection except local, general symptoms of infectious disease can be present - fever, general weakness and enlarged of lymph nodes in the neck. Primary infection, or first contact with HSV (herpes simplex virus) usually occurs in early childhood and can pass even without any symptoms.
  • After the first infection, the virus remains in the nerve cells and can be reactivated periodically, causing the re-appear of symptoms usually in the same or nearly the same place. Stress, fever, menstruation or sunbathing can trigger its recurrence .
  •  Virus can be transmited even if  blisters are not present, even though when blisters appear they are most infectious.
  • A person who has oral sex with another person with labial herpes can get genital herpes.

Cold Sores Treatment

Fever Blisters usually spontaneously resolve without specific treatment. Actions that can alleviate the symptoms are:

  • Get plenty of rest. You can use medication for fever and pain that are available in the free market, but follow the instructions. Children can be given only products that are specifically designed for them.
  • Do not squeeze nor scratch blisters
  • Avoid kissing and touching whan you have blisters
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before contact with another person
  • If the fever blisters often appear, consult with your doctor. He will probably refer you to use an antiviral drug in tablets and creams - the purpose is to reduce the incidence of recurent infections.

Warning

When you have cold sores, avoid contact with newborn babies and people suffering from eczema because they are more vulnerable to infection. Also, avoid contact with people who have a weaken immune system (people with HIV / AIDS, people who take drugs against cancer or transplant) because then the virus can significantly endanger their lives.

!!!Infection with herpes simplex may have serious complications. One of the most serious is eye infection and the possible occurrence of blindness. If you experience eye pain or notice blisters near the eye, seek immediate medical attention!!!
