How to recognize and treat a cough?

Autumn is a critical period for many with respiratory diseases. Big changes in temperature and changing of colder and warmer days, favor viruses that attacks the respiratory organs. One of the major signs of respiratory infections, is cough, which makes it necessary to explain how a cough occure, what kind of cough exist and what are the best treatments.

How does cough appear?
Cough is primarily a defensive reaction, reflex. Every reflex begins with stimulans that triggers it. Stimulans of respiratory organs is initiator of cough reflex, and by far the most common triggers of cough reflex are infections and allergies. After stimulation, comes a deep breath(inxalation), then powerful exhalation followed by narrowing of the trachea and larynx that can be heard as a cough. Exhalation is incredibly strong, so that the droplets expelled from the respiratory tract are flying at a speed of over 150 km / h!
There are two basic types of cough: "dry" (non-productive or stimulatory) and "wet" - productive! This division is good for understanding the problem, although there are a variety of transitional forms of cough.

“Dry” Cough
Dry cough is also called irritating or unproductive, and occurs as a result of direct damage to the upper respiratory tract. Almost all respiratory viruses causes this, some more, some less, but the result of their work is "wounded" mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. The nerve endings that "transfers" stimulus, cough receptors, are demaged in such wounded membrane and this causes  the coughing which often comes in attacks.
One of the most common reasons for irritative coughing is pouring of secretions from the nose into the throat and windpipe, where the secretion practically sticks, after which the body is trying to expel it. Coughs are in attacks and  nothing can be cough out and sometimes because of this irritative straining vomiting can occur. The more you cough the more you are damaging already wounded mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. This vicious cycle lasts until it we stoppe and whenl the virus, the most common cause for this type of cough, is defeated.

Productive "Wet" cough
This type of cough occurs when the lungs or bronchi are full of secretion and by coughing secretion  is "pumped out". For this reason, called the "productive". Usually it's bronchitis, and more rarely of pneumonia. Often the question arises whether each wet cough is coming from the lungs. The good news is that it DOES NOT. Profuse slimy secretion from the nose and the "upper part of the" throat may be stuck in a throat and windpipe and that causes "wet" coughting although there is nothing in the lungs. This gives a false picture of productive cough, but actually it is irritative cough with "wet" overtones.
